Start with the instrument's story
I ask what happened, when it happened and whether the guitar has been under string tension since the damage. A fall, impact, heat exposure, long storage or previous repair each leaves different clues. I also ask whether the guitar has sentimental value. An instrument inherited from a family member may justify careful work even when its resale value alone would not.
The owner should mention previous glue work, replaced parts, tuning problems, electrical faults and any change in playability before the visible break. Hiding an old repair does not help; it makes the estimate less reliable and can change the safest repair method.
Photos are a screening tool, not a final diagnosis
Good photos help me decide whether an inspection is worthwhile. I request the full front and back, both sides of the neck, headstock front and rear, bridge area, body joints and close-ups of every crack. The serial plate or model information can help identify construction and likely replacement parts.
I ask for images in natural light where possible, without filters, and with one wider photo showing where each close-up belongs. A single dramatic close-up can hide the direction of a crack or the way several damaged areas connect.
Headstock and neck breaks
A broken headstock can look final, yet some breaks provide enough clean mating surface for a strong repair. Others are splintered, contaminated with old glue or missing wood. I inspect the grain direction, truss-rod area, tuner holes and whether the break closes naturally without forcing the pieces out of alignment.
The neck must also be checked beyond the break. If it is twisted, badly bowed or damaged at the heel, repairing the headstock alone may produce an instrument that is structurally joined but still cannot be set up properly. I do not promise a playable result based only on the most obvious crack.
Acoustic bridge and body problems
On an acoustic guitar, a lifting bridge may be a symptom rather than the whole fault. I look for top movement, loose internal braces, damage around the bridge plate and changes in neck angle. Simply forcing a lifting bridge down without understanding the cause can move the problem elsewhere.
Body cracks need inspection inside and outside. Their position, cleanliness and movement matter. A cosmetic finish line is not always a structural crack, while a small opening near a load-bearing joint can be more important than it appears.
Hardware and electronics
For electric and electro-acoustic guitars I check tuners, nut, bridge, output jack, controls, pickups and wiring. A crackling control may need cleaning or replacement; intermittent output can come from a loose jack, poor solder joint or damaged cable. I test methodically rather than replacing several parts because one symptom appears.
Replacement parts need to fit the instrument. A part that can be screwed into place is not automatically correct for string spacing, scale, break angle or appearance. Where drilling or permanent modification is required, the owner should understand that before work begins.
Playability is a complete system
After structural condition, I assess frets, nut slots, neck relief, action, intonation and tuning stability. Low action is not always good if notes buzz or choke. High action can result from several causes, and lowering the saddle is not a cure for every one of them.
A repair and a setup are related but not identical. The instrument may need time to settle after structural work before the final setup. I explain that sequence so the owner understands why a guitar is not always repaired, strung and returned in one quick step.
Repair value versus replacement value
I consider the cost of parts, labour, finish work and the risk of discovering additional damage. For an inexpensive instrument with no sentimental importance, replacement may be the honest recommendation. For a distinctive, well-loved or difficult-to-replace guitar, a more involved rebuild may make sense.
A responsible assessment includes the option not to repair. The aim is a useful instrument and an informed owner, not work at any cost.
I separate essential work from optional cosmetic improvement. A structurally sound, playable repair may still show its history. Making the break invisible can require much more finish work and expense without improving the way the guitar plays.
What I will not promise from a photograph
I will not guarantee final cost, invisible finish, exact completion time or perfect playability before hands-on inspection. Photos can establish a likely direction and prevent wasted travel, but the instrument must be examined for hidden movement, old adhesive, neck condition and part availability.

- Guitar make, model and approximate age
- A short explanation of what happened
- Full front, back and side photographs
- Close-ups of every break from several angles
- Photos of the neck, headstock, bridge and body joints
- Details of old repairs or replaced parts
- Whether the guitar has sentimental value
- Your location and preferred contact method
Do not keep tuning a visibly damaged instrument to full tension merely to demonstrate the fault. If a break is moving or unstable, leave it alone, preserve loose pieces and ask for advice on safe transport.
After inspection
I explain the likely repair path, parts, limitations and whether the work is structural, functional, cosmetic or a combination. If the job proceeds, the agreed goal should be clear: safe playing condition, improved reliability, restoration appearance or a custom rescue project.
